Passport Information

Your passport needs to be valid for at least six (6) months prior to your journey's end and should have a minimum of two (2) blank visa pages for entry and exit stamps.

Visa Information

A tourist visa is required for U.S. passport holders for entry into Ghana. To apply, visit https://newyork.mfa.gov.gh/. U.S. citizens must at least obtain a single-entry visa, which is valid for three months. Apply at least 60 days prior to your arrival date.

A visa can also be obtained on arrival in Ghana, however, the visa on arrival process requires applicants to stand in several different lines with wait times of two hours or longer.

Visa requirements and laws regarding entry into foreign countries change frequently, and you, as the guest, are solely responsible for ensuring that you have the necessary travel documents for entry into all countries during your journey.

Vaccination Requirements

Proof of Yellow Fever vaccination is required for entry into Ghana. The vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before your trip, and you must carry the International Certificate of Vaccination (commonly known as the “yellow card”) with your passport. Entry may be denied without it. Vaccinations are available through your primary care provider, local travel clinics, Walgreens, or any CDC-designated Yellow Fever vaccination center. Visit a travel clinic or your doctor 1–2 months before departure to allow time for any recommended vaccines or prescriptions. The CDC and WHO provide up-to-date recommendations for travel vaccines at cdc.gov/travel and who.int.


Ghana is a malaria-endemic country. Talk to your doctor about antimalarial medications and mosquito bite prevention based on your travel plans. Be sure to fill any prescriptions before departing.


If your doctor advises against receiving the Yellow Fever vaccine, they can issue a medical waiver. Be sure to travel with this documentation, as it may be requested by immigration authorities.
